Does that make me a dork?
For real though, living in a college town when school isn’t in session is one of the most depressing things ever. Yeah, it’s nice that I get to go to the gym without anyone really being there to take my machines, but that’s about the only benefit. It gets really lonely to see campus where I usually hang out with all my friends and just see it totally dead.
During the semester, I can tell you for a fact that I spend more time with my friends than with my family. It’s just the way my major works – we all have the same few classes and ensembles together, as well as time outside of those. Since I usually didn’t get home until after 10 or 11 at night last semester, it was nearly a given that I spent more time with my friends.
Even though I was just saying in a few other posts that I love getting my alone time, there is such a thing as too much alone time. I haven’t completely hit it yet, but I’d definitely be willing to just spend a day with my friends instead of by myself or with my family.
I have about three ways to stay in touch with my friends right now, and I thank technology every day for them.
- Snapchat. My friends can see my just-woke-up face, my I-hate-everything face, or my what-am-I-doing face whenever I please. We usually send weird pictures and inside jokes that make me laugh at really inappropriate times.
- Facebook messenger. There’s one group chat in particular that I’m thinking about as I write this, and it never fails to make me laugh my ass off. It’s as close to being in the reed room as I can get right now, and I’m thankful for that. It’s almost as good, since I can be on the Facebook message in my pajamas.
- Texts. Honestly, this is reserved for the friends that I usually communicate with on an individual basis anyway. If I take the time out of my day to send you an individual text, you better feel pretty damn important.
This post is definitely different than the other ones that I’ve been writing, but I’m feeling kind of lonely today and I’m totally ready for all my friends to come back at this point.
