When I was training for my marathon the last few months, I found that podcasts were the best things to occupy myself as I was running. It could get pretty boring going out for sixteen miles by myself with nothing to keep me company. Seriously, one of my training routes had me passing by fields of very judgmental cows, that’s how lonely my runs usually were. I found that on long runs, I tended to tune out my music – but podcasts kept me engaged and occupied and focused on something that wasn’t just my feet hitting the pavement.
There were around 5 or so podcasts that I kept on a constant rotation, but 3 of them stood out to me as my favorites. I hope that you enjoy them!
Honorable Mentions: Serial (which I relistened to and still loved) and Listen Money Matters (though I only downloaded episodes that were pertinent to my current life)
College Info Geek. I’d been reading Thomas’s blog forever, since I loved almost all of his college posts. He has such good information about being a college student, and I would love nothing more than to be viewed as expertly as he is. I don’t know how he does everything that he does, since he runs the blog, has written a free ebook, has the podcast, and also produces a YouTube video every week. Actually, I do know how he does all of this – I picked up a lot of my habit-forming behaviors and applications from his website and his podcast. He talks about all kinds of things under the sun on his show, and I usually download anything that may seem relevant to me! His episodes are usually anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour long, with most of them falling around the 50-minute mark, so they can really occupy your time!
Welcome to Night Vale. I’d seen all sorts of things about this podcast on Tumblr for as long as I could remember, and I have a good friend at school who often wears Night Vale-related shirts. I was really starting to get into my long runs, where I had exhausted most of my other podcast options, when I remembered this podcast. I started listening to it probably at the beginning of October, if even that long ago, and I wound up getting through 17 episodes throughout the rest of my long runs. Since they all clock in anywhere from 20-30 minutes, that means quite a few hours were spent listening to the goings-on in Night Vale. However, I recommend that you don’t listen to it while running alone on creepy back roads, as you may accidentally freak yourself out.
Dear Hank and John. This is a podcast of beauty to me, and it makes me so happy. I’ve been watching the Vlogbrothers on YouTube for years, and I’ve been reading John Green’s books for over 8 years now (wow, I feel old), so it just felt right to fall into this venture with them as well. I listened to their new episode every week as a halfway-point treat on my long runs, but now I have a few episodes that I’ve been catching up on since I’ve gone into a running hiatus to treat my foot. Every week they have the ‘news from Mars and AFC Wimbledon’, the two brothers’ areas of expertise. They also answer reader/listener questions and ‘give dubious advice’. Basically, the first half is a bit of a free-for-all, as John reads poetry that Hank usually doesn’t like, then they answer a wide array of questions. Each show ends with the news from those two aforementioned places, and let me tell you how excited Hank was that week they found water on Mars. These episodes are almost always around the 45-minute mark, and they’re worth every second.
